With rumblings from Michael Keaton and director Tim Burton last year about another Beetlejuice making its way to the big screen, this latest revelation from Winona Ryder isn’t exactly shocking, but it’s nice to know that a sequel is definitely happening and she’s on board.
On Late Night with Seth Meyers, the lovely Winona confirmed a follow-up to Beetlejuice is absolutely underway.
“Um, I think I can confirm it, because Tim Burton did this interview — like, it was very hush hush, top secret … and then he was doing some press for Big Eyes and he did an on-camera interview and he said, ‘Oh yeah we’re doing it and Winona’s going to be in it,’ and I was like [shocked face].”
Keaton alternatively let the cat out of the bag awhile back as well
“I’ve emailed Tim a couple of times, talked to the writer a couple of times, but all really, really preliminary stuff. I always said that’s the one thing I’d like to do again, if I ever did anything again. But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another.” (MTV)
Burton also told IGN at the end of last year that he wanted to move forward with the project.
“There is a script, and I would love to work with him again. I think there is now a better chance than ever… I miss that character. There’s something that’s cathartic and amazing about it. I think it’s closer than ever.”
Burton has been hit or miss on a lot of films since the days of Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, so I’m little reserved on my excitement. I really hope this isn’t a cash grab and that he can bring something even as close to incredible as the masterpiece that is known as Beetlejuice. With Keaton and Ryder on board my reservations are lifting a little. All I can say is this sequel better open with Beetlejuice sitting in the waiting room of the afterlife with his ticket still in hand or they’ll have missed a golden opportunity for continuity.
