Like many of us TV loving people, I too love to binge watch a show. This phenomenon is standard for today’s millennial– with TV stations offering On Demand channels and Netflix releasing their own series, we’ve been afforded the option to unplug all afternoon and receive immediate gratification of episode after episode. In this list I will share all the Netflix original series that I personally have viewed and IMO whether you should check them out or not. I will try to be vague enough that I don’t leak any major spoilers. Enjoy!
This show is literally hot off the presses. It released in June and of course, I finished it. It’s about “a group of people around the world are suddenly linked mentally, and must find a way to survive being hunted by those who see them as a threat to the world’s order.” (IMDB) The hook in the beginning is watching each character slowly realize they can see, hear, and eventually interact with each other. The other cool part of the show is when needed, they can transfer each other’s abilities. My favorite scenes are when Sun steps in to help “Van Damme”. She’s such a boss! There is a lot of boning in this show, which is fine, but you might not watch it with your parents. The cinematography is artsy at times (like the birth scene that everyone experiences). I would say this show is a definite watch.
This series was released in April of this year so you might not have heard of it yet. It’s about “a blind lawyer, with his other senses superhumanly enhanced, [who] fights crime as a costumed superhero.” (IMDB) Daredevil, Matt Murdock, is a Marvel comic book character and he is a complete badass. It’s awesome watching him listen to the sounds around him and fight with a mask over his eyes. Maybe it’s because Daredevil looks like Westley from The Princess Bride that makes me an instant fan? I think subconsciously I’ve fallen for him for this reason. His lawyer partner, Foggy Nelson, seems blah at first but he starts to really grow on you and by the end of the first season you love him too. This is a definite watch in my book.
HOUSE OF CARDS
If you’ve been sleeping on this, WAKE UP! The third season is done and the fourth comes out in 2016. If you want to get deep into this show and binge now, you can. Simply, it’s about “a Congressman [who] works with his equally conniving wife to exact revenge on the people who betrayed him.” (IMDB) Kevin Spacey’s character, Francis Underwood, is amazing in this show. The best part about his character is when he looks to the camera and talks directly to the audience, exposing how he truly feels about a person or a situation, then pans back into the scene and plays his part as an actor in his world of politics. Also, if your skeptical about politics this show won’t help. There is so much that happens that reminds you of real life and makes you question our political system. There are also some major jaw dropping moments in these seasons. Like MAJOR JAW DROPPING MOMENTS. It’s a recommended watch in my book.
Also a newby to 2015, this show features my favorite TV dad ever, Coach Taylor! In this role he plays a younger brother in a seriously screwed up family. The biggest problem with this family though is the oldest brother, Danny Rayburn. You’re not quite sure at first why the family hates Danny so much, but it’s clearly evident no one wants him around. As the show progresses, the reason for all the hate unfolds. The reason this show is a winner in my book is because of how anxious I felt watching it. A major plot piece is revealed very early in the show so you spend the rest of the time wondering when and how it happens. I don’t know if saying this show “literally stressed me out” gives it the merits it deserves, but it’s how I felt. I recently recommended this show to my dad and I’m enjoying the occasional text messages like, “didn’t see that coming”, etc. It’s another solid recommendation in my book.
You’re probably wondering if I watched anything that I didn’t like and the answer is yes, Hemlock Grove. I only watched the first season and surprisingly there are two more. It’s about a teenage girl that gets murdered and then the whole town is looking for her killer. Seems like a good murder mystery thriller until the show gets super wanky. I should’ve known since the town is named after a poison that killed Socrates. I don’t want to spoil the big surprise but let’s just say this TV series could be on the CW and fit in nicely. And WTF was up with the monster-faced sister? This show had high hopes but it sadly didn’t make the cut.
If you’re a fan of this show, you know the Bluth family chicken joke. This scene would end with Michael Bluth asking, “Has this family ever seen a chicken?” The first 4 seasons of this show are amazing. I own them all and can rewatch them again and again without ever getting bored. The writing is so well done, the laughs just keep coming. The last season aired several years later and aired on Netflix exclusively. I think because the show was already on a pedestal for me, the 5th season was a little bit of a disappointment. If I had to rate it with the rest of the series I would say the 5th season was just okay. I would say go find the first 4 seasons and watch those instead. If you’ve never seen the show and you’re not convinced, just go read the 35 best Lucille Bluth quotes here.
TRAILER PARK BOYS
Just like Arrested Development, this show was already in existence and aired for 7 seasons before ending in 2007. Then Netflix got it and released seasons 8 and 9 exclusively. Unlike Arrested Development, these follow ups were great. At a high level, the show is about “life between prison terms. Always trying to play the angles, always done-in by forces beyond their control, and always in the middle of a gunfight, Ricky and Julian are decent, hard-working guys trying to cope with the New World Economic Order. It’s not that the boys don’t know right from wrong, it’s just that “right” rarely presents itself.” (IMDB) In more simple terms, this show is about some serious losers living in a trailer park doing all kinds of WTF stuff (like growing weed, making a hotel for cats, etc.). Season 10 is coming in 2016 and I will be watching. (PS – Don’t watch the stand-up special. It’s absolutely horrible).
