The 1990 horror cult classic Tremors is getting rebooted for TV and Kevin Bacon will be returning as actor and executive producer.
Tremors took place in a dusty Nevada town called Perfection and followed a group of locals who fought off the advances of deadly sand worms. The original film starred Kevin Bacon and went on to spawn numerous direct to video sequels (which Bacon wasn’t a part of) and a short lived TV series on the Sci Fi Channel (now SyFy).
UCP and Blumhouse Productions are developing the reboot and are still shopping it around, claiming they have “multiple bidders” interested. One obvious choice would be SyFy, but with the recent success of Ash vs Evil Dead (another classic horror franchise that got the TV reboot treatment recently), STARZ seems like a good fit too.
Bacon returns to the role of Valentine McKee 25 years after his original performance and recently said “I’d love to do something else with Tremors and revisit the character 25 years later,” he said. “Part of what’s great about that movie is there are next to no digital effects. The monsters are done with puppetry, and it’s still off, funny and scary — it’s a cool accomplishment.”
With Ash vs Evil Dead and Tremors both getting adapted for television, hopefully other horror properties will reinvented. I think The Omen or Hellraiser would be excellent picks as expanded series for TV… fingers crossed.
