The Big Lebowski is one of the greatest films ever made. It’s jammed pack with amazing characters, visuals, and music… but what am I telling you for? You already know this. If you don’t know, I feel bad for you son. Stop reading this and go watch it immediately.
The Big Lebowski is also packed with tons of hidden tidbits. We are now going to shed some light on these little know facts from the film and blow your mind.
01. THE DREAM SEQUENCE
Let’s start with the 2nd dream sequence after Jackie Treehorne spikes The Dude’s white russian. The entire sequence is designed through callbacks from the rest of the film up to that point. This chart shows a side by side break down of the whole thing.
02. JACKIE’S HENCHMEN SWITCH OUTFITS FROM THEIR FIRST TO LAST SCENE
Woo likes to pee on rugs, he also likes to wear his buddy’s clothes.
03. “DID THE DUDE BURN ONE ON THE WAY OVER?”
That was what Jeff Bridges (The Dude, His Dudeness, Duder, or El Duderino) would ask The Coen Brothers (the directors) before shooting a scene. If the answer was yes, Jeff would rub the hell out of his eyes to make The Dude look…. well, you know.
04. AUTOBAHN WAS POKING FUN AT A REAL BAND CALLED KRAFTWERK
During one of The Dude’s visits to Maude, we learn that The Nihilists were in a band called Autobahn. The name comes from an epic 23 minute long song called… Autobahn. Written by the famous German synth-rock group Kraftwerk. Obviously Autobahn’s entire look was taken right off Kraftwerk’s record as well.
05. THE BIG LEBOWSKI AND THE DUDE HAD MET IN A PREVIOUS LIFE
Both Jeff Bridges and David Huddleston (The Big Lebowski) have worked together on screen before. They both starred in a little known film called Bad Company in 1972.
06. THE DUDE CONSUMES A TOTAL OF 9 WHITE RUSSIANS THROUGHOUT THE FILM
07. ALMOST EVERY TIME WE SEE DONNY HE’S WEARING A BOWLING SHIRT, AND ALL OF THEM HAVE SOMEONE ELSE’S NAME ON THEM
I think Jug is the best name. Side note: The Dude is also seen wearing a bowling shirt towards the end of the movie, which also displays the wrong name on it.
08. THE DUDE IS IN EVERY SCENE OF THE FILM EXCEPT THE ONE WHERE THE NIHILISTS ARE IN THE DINER
WRONG! The Dude is in every scene of the movie. Following the style of classic film noir, The Coen Brothers even inserted The Dude in this scene. If you look close, you’ll see Walter’s van parked outside. The following scene in the van is where The Dude breaks down The Big Lebowski’s elusive scheme.
09. THE 9/11 CONSPIRACY
Hold onto your tin hat. Everyone loves a good conspiracy, and this one is pretty absurd. Many believe The Coen Brother’s predicted 9/11. In the grocery store scene at the start of the film you see The Dude making out a check on September 11th, ten years before the attacks. You also hear George Bush giving his famous “This aggression will not stand” speech in the background, which was a preamble to the war in Iraq.
10. (SPOILER) THE WARNING SIGNS OF DONNY’S DEMISE
You may have thought Donny’s heart attack was brought on by the confrontation with The Nihilists, but there were signs of his impending doom earlier on. Every time Donny bowls, he gets a strike. The only time he doesn’t, is before the confrontation. After he misses the strike we see him visibly upset. He’s also seen rubbing his arm: numbness, tingling, or weakness of the arm is said to be one of the signs of an oncoming heart attack.
