The 2015 documentary landscape is shaping up to be one for the record books. There are a lot of promising films popping up and a whole bunch of trailers out there to peak our interest. We’re going to take a look at some choice cuts that received rave reviews from the Hot Docs Film Festival, which previews some of the best documentaries for the upcoming year.
01. KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK
Now available on HBO. Montage of Heck looks deep into the life of Nirvana’s frontman and musical icon, Kurt Cobain. It’s extremely well constructed and hosts a ton of captivating visuals taken directly from the singer’s personal diaries, as well as interviews from everyone who was close with Kurt (except Dave Grohl… hmm).
02. THE WOLFPACK
This doc focuses on a reclusive Manhattan family who only leaves their apartment once or twice a year, if not at all. The kids only access to the outside world is through film and television. With aspirations for something greater, the boys start to recreate their favorite movies.
03. THE NIGHTMARE
Director Rodney Ascher was responsible for bringing you Room 237, the critically acclaimed documentary about the various conspiracy theories behind the horror classic, The Shining. Playing within the docu-horror sub genre, Ascher’s newest film, The Nightmare, look terrifyingly awesome. Who knew a doc about sleep paralysis could scare the crap out of you?
04. RAIDERS!: THE STORY OF THE GREATEST FAN FILM EVER MADE
This film has been getting a lot of hype and looks pretty entertaining. Raiders! follows 3 guys who created a shot by shot remake of Raiders of the Lost Arc over a 6 six year period during their youth. Now reunited, they are tasked with completing the one scene they could never shoot.
05. THE VISIT
The Visit explores the “what if” scenario of running into extraterrestrial life and the impact of that on humanity. The doc has a very cinematic feel to it and probably tops my list of “must sees” for 2015.
