Disney just announced Tuesday that they are planning to release a 5th film in the Indiana Jones franchise and it’s slated to hit theaters July 19, 2019.
The film will be directed by Steven Spielberg and will also star Harrison Ford as the iconic Dr. Indiana Jones. Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will be producing the film.
Chairman of the Walt Disney Studios Alan Horn said of the news, “Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019. It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”
Spielberg and Ford first created the iconic archaeologist Indiana Jones with the release of Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. Subsequently they have reprised the character in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, all of which have brought in close to $2 billion globally at the box office.
In December, Spielberg claimed he couldn’t imagine any other actor playing Indy.
“It’s certainly not my intention to ever have another actor step into his shoes in the way there have been many actors that have played Spider-Man or Batman,” he said. “There is only going to be one actor playing Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford.”
Whether or not Disney agrees is another thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to add in another Shia LaBeouf type character that seemingly looks like he’s aiming to pick up the moniker and run with it as the new Indiana Jones for future installments of the film. We’ll see in 2019 I suppose.
