Disney and Lucasfilm just dropped a production announcement teaser for Star Wars: Episode VIII and it’s pretty awesome.
They pick up where The Force Awakens ends with more footage of the island, Rey and Luke Skywalker. This is succeeded with a cut-away of director Rian Johnson and the cast celebrating their first shoot.
I must say I was very surprised to see something like this so early, especially considering no footage for Rogue One has yet been released. Either way it’s exciting and I’ll take whatever I can get. Along with the video, Disney and Lucasfilm also released details on the cast, with some superb new additions along with some familiar faces.
Benicio Del Toro (Sicario and The Usual Suspects), Laura Dern (Jurassic Park and Wild) and newbie Kelly Marie Tran have been added to the cast of Star Wars: Episode VIII, along with Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis, who are all making their return following The Force Awakens.
Rian Johnson is taking over directing and writing, with JJ Abrams stepping into the role of producer. Steve Yedlin will also be the new director of photography, who Johnson used before on Looper and Brick.
Star Wars: Episode VIII is slated for release Dec. 15, 2017 and started principal filming in London today.
