Star Trek fans rejoice, the sci-fi behemoth is headed back to television in 2017.
That’s right, a new series is being developed at CBS and should see the light of day in January 2017. The franchise hasn’t been on TV since the cancellation of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2005, instead, focusing its efforts on the big screen with director JJ Abrams’ Star Trek (2009) and it’s follow up Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013).
Star Trek producer Alex Kurtzman is reportedly working on the new project at CBS, with the search for a writer currently underway. The news hits just in time for Star Trek’s 50th anniversary, here’s what CBS president David Stapf had to say about it:
“There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration, everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”
The premiere will air on CBS in January, but ensuing episodes will air on CBS All-Access, which is a paid access online channel for CBS.
“This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before – directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access,” said Marc DeBevoise, Executive Vice President/General Manager – CBS Digital Media. “We’ve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.”
The series is not connected to Star Trek Beyond, the feature film set to hit theaters next year. There was a lot of buzz and a few AMA’s on Reddit, by Michael Dorn (who played Lt. Worf on Star Trek The Next Generation) about his attempt to launch a new Star Trek series chronicling the life of Lt. Worf after TNG – whether or not the new series has any connection to that project is unclear.
