This weekend two things owned the box office: bloodthirsty dinosaurs and Chris Pratt. That’s right, Jurassic World pummeled theaters worldwide making $524.9 million globally, the best ever for an opening weekend and solidifying Pratt’s status as a huge box office draw.
The previous title holder was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which grossed $483.2 million it’s opening weekend in 2011.
The U.S. box office numbers for Jurassic World are insane as well, bringing in $208 million and setting the record for best domestic opening weekend, previously held by the Avengers, which made $207 million in 2012.
Obviously with this kind of success Hollywood will be making a sequel and Entertainment Weekly confirmed yesterday Chris Pratt has already signed up for it.
Here’s a little editorializing: I got to check out Jurassic World yesterday and it was a lot of fun. It’s really effective at being a silly summer blockbuster and If you go into it with those expectations, I think you’ll enjoy yourself. I’d gladly welcome another installment and look forward to seeing where they can take it… you’d think at this point people would be smart enough to stop going to Jurassic Park (or World or whatever) given its history.
