Sometimes when I’m watching a movie or a TV show, I find myself in awe of a particular updo. Surprisingly most of the hairstyles you see on the big screen can translate to your normal day, so I put together a list of some of my favorite hairstyles that I would actually wear right now. To be clear, this isn’t a list of iconic hairstyles (even though one or two are listed here), but a list of hairstyles to try out for yourself based on some of my personal favorites. If I left out Farrah Fawcett’s feathered blowout (from Charlie’s Angel’s) it’s because I wouldn’t wear my hair like that, ever. I respect that look, but that’s not what this article is about. You’re welcome and enjoy.
01. 19TH CENTURY BRAIDED CINNAMON BUN
Movie: Jane Eyre (2011)
A mousy governess who softens the heart of her employer soon discovers that he’s hiding a terrible secret.
I’m a bit obsessed with the 2011 version of Jane Eyre. Super hottie, Michael Fassbender, might have something to do with this, but also Mia Wasikowska’s performance in this film is superb. Oh, and her bun – this bun says, “I’m tight and neat but layered with complexity.”
Get the look: Some girls over on Pinterest must love her too cause they put together this tutorial on how to accomplish the 19th Century braided cinnamon bun.
02. BETTY DRAPER’S BEEHIVE
Show: Mad Men (2007 – 2015)
A drama about one of New York’s most prestigious ad agencies at the beginning of the 1960s, focusing on one of the firm’s most mysterious but extremely talented ad executives, Donald Draper.
I loved all the women characters in this show and there are seriously so many amazing hairstyles to chose from; however, there is this one episode in Season 3 when Betty and Don are in Rome and Betty meets Don for a drink looking totally unlike herself. The scene is super steamy because Don acts like he doesn’t know her and they legit role-play the whole “Do you come here often?” routine. Plus, she’s got the va-va-voom sultry beehive look going and it’s kind of amazing. This hairstyle says, “Farò cose cattive a voi il mio amore.”
Get the look: You can find the Betty Draper updo tutorial here as well as other fun hair from the 1960’s.
03. WILDFIRE CURLY HAIR
Movie: Brave (2012)
Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.
I mean, who wouldn’t want these luscious locks framing your face? This hair says, “I’m wild and fierce and all over the place.”
Get the look: I try to accomplish this look at home with my wand curling iron and it works up to a certain point, but then I saw this on Pinterest and I was like, whoa. It looks time consuming but I bet it’s worth it.
04. LEIA’S SLAVE BRAID
Movie: Star Wars Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)
After rescuing Han Solo from the palace of Jabba the Hutt, the rebels attempt to destroy the second Death Star, while Luke struggles to make Vader return from the dark side of the Force.
We all know the famous look from Star Wars (two cinnamon buns on either side of the head), but I prefer the long braid when Leia was Jabba’s slave. This hairstyle says, “I’m a sexy warrior princess!” Now go buy the matching costume (Target has it) and be that for Halloween next year (even though it’s been redone a million times on Halloween and at Comic-con).

05. SHORT LAYERED BOB
Movie: Domino (2005)
A recounting of Domino Harvey’s life story. The daughter of actor Laurence Harvey turned away from her career as a Ford model to become a bounty hunter.
Ok, I’ve had my hair short many times and I have to say I do love me a layered bob. It’s mad easy and super badass. I used to be in heart with Claire Dane’s short bob in The Mod Squad until Keira Knightley done stole the show with her bitchassness. This hairstyle says, “I’m short and sassy and I own it.”
Get the look: You obviously have to get your hair cut for this but here’s how to style it just like Keira.
06. THE MARILYN MONROE
Movie: Some Like it Hot (1959)
When two musicians witness a mob hit, they flee the state in an all female band disguised as women, but further complications set in.
I love Marilyn Monroe. Her hair is iconic but it’s actually a little bit different in every movie. In How to Marry a Millionaire it’s a bit shorter and in The Misfits it’s a bit longer. I picked this film because it’s one of my favorites. Marilyn is a knockout in this and don’t even get me started on that sparkly dress she wears on her date… girl is on fire! This hairstyle says, “I like to go a little retro classic and do it Marilyn style.”
Get the look: I found this tutorial and it’s pretty easy (not a bunch of pin curls which takes forever).
07. DAENERYS TARGARYEN”QARTH” BRAIDS
TV Show: Game of Thrones (2011)
Several noble families fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros.
Yeah, GoT has been off the air for a few months now, but the Queen of Dragons is still so hot right now. Her hair is always killing it and these braids are one of my faves. This hairstyle says, “I am a goddess. Worship me.” Crazy thing is I love Emilia Clarke as a blonde so much that if I were here I’d make it a permanent hair color and I’d rock these braids too. If only I had a hair and makeup crew to follow me around and do this for me.
Get the look: Thanks to this video you can rock it yourself without a hair and makeup crew.
08. ELSA’S CORONATION CHIGNON
Movie: Frozen (2013)
When the newly crowned Queen Elsa accidentally uses her power to turn things into ice to curse her home in infinite winter, her sister, Anna, teams up with a mountain man, his playful reindeer, and a snowman to change the weather condition.
I was looking for a movie that had a fancy side chignon like this one here when I stumbled across Elsa’s hairstyle in her coronation. I love the side chignon. To me this hairstyle says, “I’m polished, elegant and feminine.” Something happened when I was looking for this hairstyle tutorial… I fell down an internet rabbit hole and discovered a whole world of tutorials for Disney hair. I had NO IDEA. I am limiting myself to just one more Disney posting here (mentioned Brave earlier), but there are dozens upon dozens out there.
09. SOFT FINGER WAVES
Movie: The Great Gatsby (1974)
A Midwesterner becomes fascinated with his nouveau riche neighbor, who obsesses over his lost love.
Yes, I know this movie was redone recently with Carrie Mulligan and Leonardo DiCaprio but the OG with Mia Farrow and Robert Redford is my favorite still. Mia let her hair grow out from Rosemary’s Baby and it looks so soft and romantic styled like this. This hairstyle says, “I’m an sweet baby angel. Don’t hurt me with your piercing eyes.”
