Like every other John Carpenter property, it wasn’t gonna be long until someone eventually greenlit a remake of Big Trouble in Little China (watch out They Live). The Wrap just reported that 20th Century Fox has found their leading man to take on Kurt Russell’s historic role as Jack Burton, and that man is Dwayne Johnson… AKA The Rock.
For those not familiar, Big Trouble in Little China finds Jack Burton, a wise ass trucker with a heart of gold, mixed up in an age-old war brewing in the underbelly of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Even though the original didn’t make Fox a ton of money (11 million domestically), the film is still beloved by many and considered a cult classic.
Beside starring, The Rock is also producing, and his company (Seven Bucks Productions) were the ones who brought the idea of the reboot to Fox. Big Trouble in Little China is one of Dwayne Johnson’s personal favorites and a bit of a passion project. The film is also being written by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who were responsible for X-Men: First Class.
Beside crushing the box office this weekend in San Andreas, The Rock is starring in HBO’s new upcoming series Ballers, which airs later this month. One wonders where The Rock finds the energy and focus to keep so busy.
I’ll always have the original film to cherish, and at this point, no one should be shocked by a remake of any time-honored film. I like Dwayne Johnson, given the right role, and I think there’s potential to make something different that works off the spirit of John Carpenter’s classic. So Rock, don’t screw this up!
