Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to dominate the box office and proves to be one of the most successful films of all time. Of course that means that Disney plans on releasing a slew of other Star Wars properties (gotta make back that 4 billion investment), both in the way of Episodes VIII & IX and with numerous anthology films.
The first anthology film is Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One, which is a heist story that takes place before A New Hope and centers around the retrieval of the plans to destroy the Death Star. The next spin-off will be a Han Solo origins story directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and will tell the story of a young Han Solo. Rogue One hits theaters December 16th, 2016 and The untitled Han Solo film arrives May 25th, 2018.
Even though it’s still two years from now, the studio is wasting no time selecting their leading man. Casting is critical for this picture as Harrison Ford’s Han Solo is the definition of iconic and to say there would be large shoes to fill would be an understatement.
Variety just reported that out of the thousands of candidates who auditioned, the execs have narrowed it down to about a dozen actors including the following:
Miles Teller (Whiplash)
Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars)
Dave Franco (Neighbors)
Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction)
Scott Eastwood (The Longest Ride)
Logan Lerman (The Perks of Being a Wallflower)
Emory Cohen (Brooklyn)
Blake Jenner (Everybody Wants Some)
With filming for the Han Solo origins film set to start next January, the studio is making this early decision with the intent to introduce the young Solo with a cameo in Rogue One, which still has a month of shooting left. Very similar to the way Disney and Marvel plan on introducing Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War coming later this Summer.
The shortlist is rather unsurprising, as many of the picks are some of Hollywood’s hottest up and comers. There’s a few selections that seem odd, considering they don’t look a lot like a young Harrison Ford. Our money is on Ansel Elgort.
